Fake Protein Powder in India: How to Actually Verify What's in Your Tub

Fake and mislabelled protein powder is a documented problem in India — and the frustrating part is that you can't detect it by taste, texture, price, or brand recognition. You detect it with paperwork.

You bought a 1kg tub. The label says 24g of protein per scoop. You've been drinking it for three months.

So here's the uncomfortable question: what evidence do you have that the number on that label is true?

Not "the brand seems legit." Not "it's expensive so it must be good." Not "it mixes well and tastes fine." Actual evidence — a document, tied to the batch code printed on your specific tub, from a lab that doesn't work for the brand.

Most people in India have no such evidence. This article gives you eight checks that produce it.

The problem is bigger than the industry admits

In 2024, a group of independent researchers and citizens ran something called the Citizen's Protein Project. They bought 36 popular protein supplements off the Indian market — from manufacturers and authorised dealers, not sketchy resellers — and sent them for independent analysis.

The findings, published in the peer-reviewed journal Medicine:

  • 70% were mislabelled. The protein content did not match what the label claimed.
  • 14% contained toxins — including heavy metals, pesticides, and aflatoxins (fungal toxins).

These weren't obscure brands. These were products sitting on shelves and on the front page of e-commerce searches.

It's worth saying plainly: this is not an argument against protein powder. It's an argument against unverified protein powder. Those are different things, and the distinction is the entire point of this article.

Why the label alone means nothing

Here's the part most people don't know, and it explains everything else.

In India, the FSSAI does not pre-approve dietary and herbal supplements before they go on sale. The manufacturer is responsible for assuring the safety of the contents. Labelling and composition are scrutinised based on test results submitted by the manufacturer — and those results are not made public.

Read that again. The brand tests its own product, sends its own paperwork, and nobody outside that loop ever sees it.

This isn't a uniquely Indian problem — the US FDA operates on a similar post-market model. But it does mean one thing for you as a buyer: the label is a claim, not a verification. A claim is only as good as the willingness of the person making it to show their working.

So the real question isn't "is this brand trustworthy?" It's "what has this brand actually shown me?"

The 8 checks that actually work

Skip the internet folk-tests. Dissolving powder in water, checking how much foam forms, tasting for chalkiness — none of these detect adulteration. Flavouring agents mask everything, and maltodextrin dissolves beautifully. Here's what does work.

1. Find the 14-digit FSSAI licence number

Every food supplement sold legally in India must carry a valid 14-digit FSSAI licence number on the label. This is mandatory under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Missing number, blurry number, or a number that returns nothing when you search the FSSAI FoSCoS portal — stop there. You don't need check #2.

This is the floor, not the ceiling. A valid FSSAI number tells you the manufacturer is registered. It tells you nothing about what's in the tub.

2. Check who actually manufactured it — and whether the label admits it

Right below the FSSAI number, look for how the pack describes its own origin. Under FSSAI labelling rules, packaged food must declare the name and address of the manufacturer. You'll usually see one of two patterns:

  • "Manufactured by [Brand]" — the brand makes its own product.
  • "Marketed by [Brand] / Manufactured by [Someone else]" — the brand outsources production to a contract manufacturer.

Let's be fair about this: contract manufacturing is not a red flag by itself. Some of the best-run nutraceutical facilities in the world are third-party units with better equipment and tighter process control than most brands could build alone. Plenty of respectable companies use them.

What is a red flag is when the pack won't tell you. Three things to check:

  1. Is a manufacturer named at all? A pack that says only "Marketed by" with no manufacturing entity disclosed is failing a basic labelling requirement — and hiding the one party who actually controls what went into the powder.
  2. Does the manufacturer's own FSSAI licence check out? Both entities should carry valid numbers. Search both on FoSCoS.
  3. Is the facility a nutraceutical unit, or a general food plant running protein as a side line? These are very different things in terms of contamination control and batch documentation.

What in-house manufacturing actually gets you is not magic quality — it's undivided accountability. When the brand and the manufacturer are the same entity, there's no gap between who made the promise and who made the powder. Batch records, retention samples, formulation control, and the person who answers your complaint email all sit inside one team. Nobody can point at anybody else when a batch goes wrong.

That's the honest case for it, and it's the reason we manufacture Whole Nutrition's products ourselves rather than outsourcing.

But here's the caveat we'd rather say out loud than have you discover: in-house manufacturing does not eliminate raw material risk. Every plant protein brand in India — in-house or contract — buys its pea protein, rice protein, and cocoa from suppliers. Our control begins where the raw material arrives, not where it was grown. We have personally received fabricated Certificates of Analysis from suppliers: two different vendors, byte-identical documents, internally contradictory numbers.

Which is exactly why checks 3 through 8 still matter, for us and for everyone else. Any brand telling you "we make it in-house, so you don't need to worry about the rest" is describing half a system.

3. Ask for the lab report for your batch code

This is the single highest-value check, and it's where almost every brand fails.

There's a meaningful difference between:

  • "We publish our lab reports" (one PDF, from 2023, for a batch you'll never receive), and
  • "Enter the batch code printed on your pack and see the report for that production run."

Batch-level testing is the standard behind certifications like Informed Sport and NSF Certified for Sport, precisely because a single flattering report proves nothing about ongoing production. Ingredients change. Suppliers change. A lot from March is not a lot from September.

Look at your pack right now. Find the batch code. Now try to find its report. If you can't — you have a claim, not evidence.

4. Read the COA properly (most people don't know how)

A Certificate of Analysis is the lab document behind a batch. Here's what a real one contains and a decorative one doesn't:

What to look for Why it matters
Named, accredited lab NABL accreditation in India, or an equivalent international body. A logo isn't accreditation — look for the certificate number.
The batch number It must match your pack. A COA without a batch number is a brochure.
Test method for each parameter Real reports cite methods (e.g. AOAC, IS standards). "Protein: 24.1%" with no method is unverifiable.
Sample receipt and report dates Analysis takes time. A report dated the same day the sample arrived is a red flag.
Limit of quantification (LOQ) For heavy metals and pesticides, "Not Detected" is meaningless without knowing the detection threshold.
Moisture / basis of reporting Critical. See check 5.

5. Check whether the protein figure is on a dry basis

This one is subtle and catches out even careful buyers.

Suppliers often report protein content on a dry basis — i.e., with moisture mathematically removed. Powder in the real world contains moisture, typically 4–8%.

If a supplier's raw material COA says 85% protein on a dry basis, and a brand prints that number straight onto the pack without correcting for the moisture in the finished blend, the on-pack figure is inflated. Not by fraud, necessarily — by carelessness. But the outcome for you is the same: you get less than the label says.

Ask a brand whether their declared protein is "as-is" or "dry basis." The quality of the answer tells you a great deal about how closely they read their own paperwork.

6. Scan the ingredients for amino spiking

The standard protein test in the food industry (Kjeldahl) doesn't measure protein directly — it measures nitrogen, then multiplies by a conversion factor.

Free amino acids contain nitrogen too. So does creatine. So does taurine, and glycine.

Add cheap free amino acids to a blend, and the nitrogen reading goes up. The lab dutifully reports a higher "protein" number. Your muscles, which needed complete protein with a full essential amino acid profile, see none of that benefit. Documented cases show buyers believing they were getting 24g of protein per serving while receiving substantially less intact protein.

The tell: taurine, glycine, creatine, or individual amino acids appearing prominently in an ingredient list on a product advertising a high protein number. Some of these have legitimate uses — declared L-methionine in a plant blend, for instance, is a genuine formulation choice to correct a limiting amino acid. The question is whether the brand explains why it's there, or just lets the number look bigger.

7. Look for a full amino acid profile — and check it makes sense

A brand publishing a complete amino acid profile is doing something risky: it's giving you enough information to catch them out.

For plant proteins specifically, the thing to check is the sulphur amino acids — methionine and cysteine. Pea protein is naturally low in them. This is why good plant blends combine pea with brown rice protein, which is comparatively richer in methionine.

But the ratio matters enormously. A blend that's 99% pea and 1% rice can legally call itself a "pea and brown rice blend" while delivering essentially none of the amino acid complementarity that blend is supposed to provide. A meaningful ratio starts around 80:20.

If a brand claims a blend, ask for the ratio. If they claim a complete amino acid profile, ask for the numbers.

8. Ask what contaminant testing has been done

Contamination isn't a plant protein problem or a whey problem — it's an untested product problem. The Citizen's Protein Project found toxins across its sample, spanning source types. Raw agricultural inputs of every kind pick up what's in their environment, which is why the finished product is the thing that has to be tested.

Good manufacturing addresses this at two points: sourcing raw materials from suppliers who test at origin, and then re-testing the finished blend rather than trusting the paperwork upstream.

What to ask a brand for:

  • Heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury) on the finished product, not just on individual raw materials
  • Aflatoxin and microbiological testing for the batch
  • The limit of quantification stated alongside each result, so "Not Detected" actually means something

A brand that can hand you this for your batch code has closed the loop. A brand that says "our suppliers test everything" has told you about someone else's homework.

Red flags in supplier documentation

A note for anyone who's ever wondered how a brand ends up with a bad product despite "having all the paperwork."

Fabricated COAs exist, and they're better than you'd expect. Things we've encountered while vetting suppliers:

  • Two different suppliers submitting byte-identical documents. Same file, different letterhead. Both fabricated.
  • Internally contradictory values — a protein percentage that doesn't reconcile with the stated moisture and ash content on the same page.
  • A pesticide MSDS copied from another product entirely, with the original product name still visible in the metadata.
  • Heavy metal specification limits set dangerously high — technically a "spec," meaningless as a safety assurance.

The defence against all of this is the same: don't rely on supplier documentation alone. Independently test the finished product at an accredited lab, and publish the result.

What a verifiable protein actually looks like

Two things are worth saying about how we got here.

We vet suppliers adversarially. We have received Certificates of Analysis from two separate vendors that turned out to be byte-identical documents with different letterheads — fabricated. We have seen heavy metal specification limits set so high they assured nothing, and a pesticide MSDS copied wholesale from an unrelated product. Those suppliers are not in our chain. The pea protein we use comes from a verified source with third-party analysis we independently confirmed.

Is protein powder safe in India? Verified protein powder is safe for most healthy adults. Unverified protein powder is a gamble, given that 70% of a tested sample of 36 Indian products were mislabelled and 14% contained toxins. The variable that matters isn't "protein powder" as a category — it's whether the specific product has independent, batch-level testing you can inspect.

How do I check if my protein powder is real or fake? Verify the 14-digit FSSAI licence number, then request the lab report for the batch code printed on your pack. If the brand can't produce a batch-specific report from an accredited lab, you have no verification — regardless of how well-known the brand is.

Does a foam test or water test detect fake protein powder? No. Home tests based on foam, dissolution, or taste don't detect amino spiking, maltodextrin bulking, or contamination. Flavouring and emulsifiers mask all of it. Only laboratory analysis detects adulteration.

Is it better if a protein powder is made in-house instead of outsourced? Not automatically — some contract manufacturers run tighter facilities than brands could build themselves. What in-house manufacturing does give you is undivided accountability: the company selling the product is the company that made it, so batch records and responsibility sit in one place. The bigger question either way is whether the manufacturer is named on the label at all, and whether finished-product testing is published.

What is amino spiking? Adding cheap free amino acids (taurine, glycine) or creatine to a blend to inflate the nitrogen reading that standard protein tests rely on. The label protein number goes up; the usable protein doesn't.

Is plant protein more likely to have heavy metals than whey? Plant proteins carry more inherent risk because plants accumulate soil contaminants — rice and cocoa are known cadmium contributors. This is manageable through testing, which is exactly why it should be tested and published rather than assumed.

Do I actually need a protein supplement? Food first is a sound default, and most people should aim to meet their requirement through meals. A supplement earns its place when that's genuinely difficult — high training volume, a vegetarian or vegan diet where hitting the target through dal and paneer alone means a lot of volume, or a schedule that makes cooked protein at every meal unrealistic. Used that way, a well-formulated protein powder is simply a convenient food. If you have a diagnosed kidney condition, speak to your doctor before supplementing.

Is plant protein as effective as whey for building muscle? Yes, when it's formulated properly. The variable that matters is the essential amino acid profile — particularly leucine and the sulphur amino acids. A pea protein blended with brown rice protein in a meaningful ratio delivers a complete profile comparable to whey, without lactose. A blend that's pea in name only won't. This is why check 7 exists.
